Artist Benny Setiawan will be in his eighth decade of life. To celebrate the artist’s 80th year, Galeri Hadiprana will put on special exhibition of his work, from May 22, 2016 - June 5, 2016. The event is also intended as part of the 488th anniversary commemoration of Jakarta as a city. Born in Jakarta on 7 July 1937. He is regarded as one of the Indonesia’s greatest and most influential artist in watercolor. A self-taught artist, since his early childhood he has always enjoyed painting. He later joined the Yin Hua artist’s association which was founded in 1955 in Jakarta by Chinese Indonesian artist Lee Man-Fong (1913-1988). Benny learned techniques from him and other senior painters who later became famous, but he created his own style through constant practice.
In 1959 he held his first exhibition in the Gedung Chandra Naya, Jakarta. His first foreign exhibition in 1973 in the Batik Gallery Koln, Germany. In 1975 he participated in the group exhibition in the Gallery Sidney Rothman in New Jersey USA.
