PENGANTAR KURATORIAL (KURATOR INDONESIA: RAIN ROSIDI)

PENGANTAR KURATORIAL (KURATOR KOREA: JEONG OK JEON)

In recent years comics and animation have received wider acknowledgment beyond the context of contemporary pop culture.  As the new driving force to the future of creative economy, the interest in comics and animation is no longer limited to its own products, but have affected to various fields of cultural contents such as in TV drama, SF movie, and video games. Today, the stories, characters, and formats driven from comics and animation also made a significant influence in visual arts in such a way that the argument of border between high culture and popular culture is no longer legitimate.

Strictly speaking, adoption of contents, icons and aesthetics of comics and animation in the visual arts emerged in line with the return of figurative art in the mid 20th century, known as Pop Art. Arts, once detached from our life and the public, re-embraced various modes of expression from the media that Modern arts had rejected in the previous generation. Arts after Modernism reclaimed the sense of time and space, and narratives in the surface of the works. In this respect, by crossing the boundaries to the realm of everyday life, arts appropriating comics and animation not only raise questions to the authoritarianism of high art, but also suggest an open culture of communication.

The power of imagination of comics and animation makes the impossible possible, and the ordinary extraordinary. Inspired by a recent Asian board game match between a computer algorithm (AlphaGo) and a human player (Lee Sedol), the works of the international artists in the 4th Animamix Biennale Jakarta series will explore the current phenomenon of both fascination and fear toward smart machines. Themed around the mythical "Deus Ex Machina (God From the Machine)", the artworks in the exhibition will respond to mechanical creature of increasing capabilities of mimic human attributes and behaviors that have led to greater hopes of integrating machines as essential elements of the future.

It is undeniable how much humans rely on machines today to streamline various day-to-day activities and tasks. However, it is also crucial for us to be conscious of, and keep in check, our machine-integrated lives so as not to fall into the inevitability of a fully machinized world. Artists involved in this exhibition share their interest in the relationship between humans and the machine, particularly hybrid figures that are constantly evolving and unveiling new possibilities for humanity. By bridging distinct ideas of technology and nature, the real and virtual, reason and sensitivity, the exhibition will demonstrate the capabilities of artistic imagination to delve into this inquiry for the future.

The concept of Animamix Biennale

The artists in the field of animamix are not only the producer of animation or comics, and they are quite active in all kinds of creative industry. Various artistic elements could be found in their works, which can represent animamix-- that is the combination of "animation" and "comics". Besides animation and comics, Animamix is an all-inclusive concept of the aesthetic choice in this new century.

Several artistic institutions hold exhibitions related to Animation and Comics at the same time or in succession so as to construct an exhibition network and accumulate the new force of modern Animation and Comics, that is the form of Animamix Biennale.

He is internationally renowned for pioneering the creative use of digital media in the fields of virtual and augmented reality, immersive visualisation, navigable cinematic systems and interactive narrative. His work includes performance, sculpture, video and many interactive installations.

Brief Introduction of Animamix Biennale 2015-2016:

Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai has dedicated to constructing a bridge that connects different artistic fields and accumulating and supporting creative artists. After famous curator Victoria Lu advanced the concept "Animamix", Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai has

wedded to this new aesthetic theory--"youth, diversity, innovation and cross-boundary". The concept of "Animamix Biennale" came into existence just after the rise of "Animamix". Different from traditional Biennale,

"Animamix Biennial" refers to that several artistic institutions hold exhibitions related to Animation and Comics at the same time or in succession so as to construct an exhibition network and accumulate the new force of modern Animation and Comics. In 2007, we hosted first Animamix Biennale, then more and more artists, arts institutions and people who love Animamix have become a part of this event.

In 2013 and 2014, we are very honored that we have worked with the other Asian artistic institutions and organized Animamix Biennale 2013-2014. The six institutions are Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Daegu Art Museum in Korea, Academy of Arts & Design Tsinghua University, Hong Kong Visual Arts Center (with the support and participation of Oi! and City University of Hong Kong), Macao Museum of Art and Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai.

Now, we are working on Animamix Biennale 2015-2016, and we genuinely expect that more artists and artistic institutions participate it and make Animamix a hot trend in Asia and even around the whole world.

Chief Curator:Sunhee Kim (Director of Daegu Art Museum, Korea) Theme: Drama Within---by. Sunhee Kim

Animamix Biennale 2013-14: Drama Within 2013.11.23~2014.2.16

'Anima' is derived from Latin, meaning 'psych' or 'life's breath'. Anima is an unchanging word that is still in use until today, probably due to the sizable influence of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung. According the Naver Encyclopedia, "while the anima (masculine: animus) is endowed by all that is positive and negative, Jung asserts that by rendering them into consciousness and promoting the integration of the gap, one can achieve self-realisation. Such process is creative, but is also endowed by the possibility of destruction."

Straying a little from Jung's anima - animation, a word rooted in anima, is a term used to portray the continuous motion of still images or figures making them look alive. The exhibition title, 'Animamix' is simply the combination of 'animation' and 'comics', and it speaks of all artistic proclivity that is animation or comics oriented. Victoria Lu, who put together the first Animamix Biennale, stipulates the four characteristics that describe the scope of Animamix as follows:

All the various and abundant forms of Animamix in popular culture are centered on the worship of youth and the pursuit of an idealized youthful beauty.

The bizarre and ever-changing narrative texts in Animamix art imbue the images with a strong narrative character, which themselves form a visual language.

The colorful lights derived from the electronic media create a totally new and unique visual experience of art with colored lights.

Animamix involves the use of great human, material and financial resources interacting and cooperating across different sectors.

For a long time now, art's subject matters have not been confined to the world of reality that we see and experience. Reality is just the world that is outside the shells of our physical bodies, whereas inside ourselves, there exists another world that is intuitive and boundlessly free. It does not matter if this world of boundless freedom is imagination or fantasy. Art is always bound to the projection of such implicit world, big or small.

In the Animamix world, familiar everyday life, and the unfamiliarity of all the

transformations that humans can imagine, coexist. By nature, it is guaranteed to have far greater freedom of expression than any other characteristically different genre. Therefore, the same is applied to the creation and appreciation of animation. One peels experience and perception away that are piled on layer over layer, and flies over to the boundlessly expansive world somewhere outside Earth from an unknown deep and narrow place - there is no beginning or end to the story. However, one cannot only think of it as reality and absolute fiction. Instead, there is charm to crossing the boundaries of existence and the world of science. If you think about it, the real world, and the world of fiction or exaggeration, are intimately connected. The fictitious world, invisible to the eye and inexperiencable, that we think of may be like the world of day and night - a world made unseeable merely by darkness.

The theme of the upcoming exhibition, Drama Within, therefore addresses a way to bring out the stories inside of us through the forms of Animamix. They can be stories of the self, and also stories made up with no evidence. Drama Within aims to bring out stories that will become the communion of our latent aesthetic consciousness and imagination; to ultimately find oneself and the alternative self; to peel away the layer; and also to listen with raised ears to gossip about our hidden dramas; to communicate; to have fun and be youthful. It is an attempt to free oneself from the things that wrap too tightly around me.

The Animamix world thankfully does not need much explanation, asking us to specially understand it. Men and women of all ages - in fact, it does not even matter even if one can not understand it. It is endowed with the attributes to inherently become easily familiar to anybody. As this exhibition is to be showcased in many countries simultaneously, I anticipate a great variety of sensibilities depending on each different country, region and culture. If it were possible, I wish for the actual communion of all Drama Within from the different places. I wish for the "drama within" to spread over country to country to reach each and every point of our global village.

The Animamix Biennale is a new, alternative biennale operating on an innovative format of the present time, in which the communication on a global scale is made possible thanks to the development of science and technology. The existing biennales have been organized as events confined to one specified place and time, but this new Biennial takes place simultaneously in various different cities for a sustained period under the same theme of Animamix. Another special aspect of the Biennial is how the new organization of the Biennial provides lively contact with the divergent cultural phenomena of each city that hosts the Biennnale. This will be able to facilitate the formation of cultural sensibility shared among the contemporaries on a more enthusiastic and intense level.

Animamix, the theme of the Biennale, is coined from 'animation' and 'comics', both which occupy iconic positions in our present time. The word Animamix implies the adoration of youth culture and keen interest in popular images that are newly emerging under the influence of new technology, and it also denotes trans- class art form, the content of which blurs the distinction between high art and low art. The Animamix Biennial stands apart from the current biennales in examples of promotional publications: all the

participating cities share the same logo and the same e-catalogue format and they operate a common website- the exhibition is run in a much more open way. As a result, the exhibition budget as been reduced and at the same time it has become possible to secure an audience many times greater than the audience at the existing biennales. The public friendly theme sufficiently serves to narrow the interstice between art and everyday life.

In the past, Pop Art attempted artistic appropriation of animation and comics that were categorized as mass culture; by a similar token, the significance of the Biennial is to establish Animamix as a genre of contemporary art that will take the center stage among the masses.

KAOSHING MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS

LOVE LOVE: Animamix Biennale 2013-14 2013.11.26~2014.2.9

Curator:Pei-Ni HSiEH

Relying on the representation of art, animation expresses, in miniature, a domaincreated by our imaginations, and existing apart from real space. That magic, fantastical world, forgotten by time, is free from the constraints of physical space and experience; it is both real and illusory, and both nostalgic and futuristic. It possesses boundless freedom and limitless possibilities, encouraging people to willingly overstep the boundary between the real and imaginary, and be captured be the irresistible appeal of animamix-art and animation.

Animation is derived from the Latin word "anima", which means the essence of life. Animation usually refers to the bestowing the power of continuous movement on still pictures or figurines, and thereby achieving a lifelike effect. From its birth in the early 20th century until the present, the virtual world of the animation has conducted a full-scale assault on the real world, inducing wild identification and love among viewers. In the realm of art, animation's distinctive 2D and hyperplane characteristics have taken hold of artists and induced great attraction and fascination. During the early 1990's, the influence of animation spread to a number of young Japaneses artists, including Kodai Nakahara, Takashi Murakami, Masato Nakamura, Chiezo Taro, and Yoshitomo Nara, who had been inspired by animation and special effects film, and relied on brilliant colors and a flat animation style to produce doll-like works that attracted considerable attentation. Today, artists have brought animamix to a much higher state of development. Instead of the experimental early efforts of the past, today's animamix incorporates deep reflection or subtle metaphors, and its form and content has grown much deeper and diverse. Like the world of animation, the boundless of contemporary art extend boundlessly, reaching everywhere.

This exhibition attempts to shed light on animamix today, and explore the new look and future possibilities of contemporary animamix in Taiwan. The exhibition focuses on Taiwan's new generation of artist, who all grew up since the 1980s, in a time when animation was already ubiquitous. As a result, these individuals were familiar with animation from an early age, and didn't have to depend on prototypes in the form of Japanese or American animation. Instead, they have spontaneously used the thinking and language of animation to create highly original imaginary worlds. In addition, because the culture of animation has had a deep influence on artists who were born in the age of graphics, even when a pure art platform is employed, animamix not only displays mutual adoption of forms with animation, but also adds and invokes the central spirit and questions of animation, including the "world" providing the background for the story, "love" providing the driving force of a romantic story; and the "person", or main character in this world. These three levels are interwoven to create the wonderful appearance of contemporary animamix, and diasplay the shape of love under the virtual qualifications universally possessed by this generation.

This exhibition—The Love Love:Animamix Biennale 2013-14—is part of a series created jointly through the efforts of a number of equally outstanding art organizations in Asia: Korea's Daegu Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing, Macao

Museum of Art, and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. The form of the exhibition celebrates the same of the wonderful aesthetic achievements that result from the fusion of popular culture and art.

UNIVERSITY ACADEMY OF ARTS & DESIGN, TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY Animamix Biennale@ Tsinghua 2014.3.10~3.25

Curator: Bai Ming

Animamix Biennial 2013-2014 is now on in the Visual Art Centre, Academy of Arts& Design, Tsinghua University. This exhibition demonstrates a high quality not only of its exhibits but also of its organization. Many relevant conferences have already been held in advance in South Korea; Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, let alone countless amounts of emails and messages; a simple idea for the logo of this exhibition even constitutes many rounds of discussions; project staff of Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai even came to Beijing in person to discuss the details with us just two weeks before the exhibition. As a result, we finalized the designing plan for this exhibition, as what we are adopting now, from the one that is proposed by the famous Taiwanese curator Victoria Lu, The reason that I want to put a little detail all in here is because l myself am actually shocked by the fact that China is developing with its "high efficiency" and at its "fast pace". An idea, an available venue and right time slot could make an exhibition possible. Sometimes, an art album or an exhibition would only cost half a month's preparation and many honored guests would participate. This so called speed can produce a sense of pride; in fact, few people can plan an exhibition in such short time. By contrast, it takes more than a year to plan our exhibition, with the effort of directors, curators, and staff from six different museums. This exhibition, co-organized by Visual Art Centre, Academy of Arts& Design, Tsinghua University and Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai, will continue to exhibit in Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai after its first stop in Beijing.

Even with the same theme, our exhibition would be different from the exhibitions held in South Korea; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Curators from six different museums consider from different perspectives and demands for different things and that is, as far as l'm concerned, the most meaningful part of this exhibition, As the sole college art gallery, we always pay attention to Animamix. And more importantly, we are trying to make this exhibition a unique dia1ogue through which we are able to make every word of it even more credible in such a background full of senses of young and future.

HONGKONG VISUAL ARTS CENTER/ CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG This Slow · That Fast: Animamix Biennale2013-14 2014.3.15~4.12 / 2014.3.20~4.17

Curator: Jeffrey Shaw, Ivy Lin

ANIMAMIX has its roots in the hybridization of'animation'and'comix'.These two richly popular media streams have strongly influenced contemporary culture in myriad ways, offering aesthetic schemata that have been used to amuse, to edify and subvert, all depending how this lively language of characteristically prosaic forms is being shaped. In the curatorial approach to this exhibition, ANIMAMIX offers itself as a superficies to map a broader enquiry into these aesthetic schemata that are playfully enmeshed in the emerging contemporary media domains. Faced with the immense range in which these are being played out, a dichotomy was imposed-this slow, that fast-to create a perceptual and conceptual moire where idiosyncratic new meanings might emerge from the basis fabrics. This Slow, That Fast implies tempo, the'pace'of a given piece. Well understood in the context of music, it assumes another significance when applied to a work of timebased visual art. The subdivision of time is the apperceptual multi-temporal setting in which certain visual arguments can unfold. In this slowing down, or a speeding up, the natural pace of things, that often camouflages the evidence of what is actually going on, opens itself for closer examination. Engagements

with these art works are debriefings, synergetic situations where an inquisitive eye and an enquiring mind are to be delighted, surprised and possibly perplexed. Lento (40-45 beats per second to Presto (168-177 beats per second), these literal time frames translate into the varying rhythms of aesthetic inquiry that each of the exhibiting artists sets in motion in their respective works. Each was chosen for the palpable vigor of their visual soundings, for the craft of their multifarious aesthetic findings that inhabit, in the instance of this ambitious trans-national exhibition, the'animamix'.

MACAO MUSEUM OF ART

Macao Scenario- Animamix Biennale2013-14 2014.3.19~5.18

Curators: Ng Fong Chao, Sam Hou In

At the turn of the 21st century, in countries like Japan, Korea and China, artists gradually started to use animamix concepts and languages on their creations, showing an unbound imagination and eye-catching displays that drew global attention.

After exploring this approach for so many years, now artists no longer limit themselves to animamix elements, throwing in new media and technologies and further developing animamix art, with the works now carrying deeper connotations: while artists mostly express their personal feelings and concerns about daily life, some works convey a strong social criticism. Besides, animamix artistic language is easily accessible, and thus, unlike other art forms, it can easily resonate with the general public, which explains its unique charm and power.

The exhibition features 23 artists, mostly Macao's young generation, below 30 years old. In Macao Scenario, artists draw on daily experiences about people and things around them to explore their native city from different angles, while also addressing global issues. Some artists produce works fully revealing animamix's illuminant streak of fantasy, using their rich imagination and re-focusing on the reality through different media, in a plethora of virtual scenes that 'contradict the real world' in order to elicit a reflection. Others focus on their own or human nature, projecting it on artistic creation and applying animamix's visual language to expose their inner feelings, emotions and desires, thereby presenting an imaginative world full of metaphors, prodding the viewer into a personal appraisal.

The exhibition has also selected nine excellent animations by local young creatives to be showcased in the 'Youth Animation' Section, allowing the audience a glimpse of the latest works of the new generations. Traditionally, animamix art may not have been highbrow and elegant, but it has a distinctive vitality, being able to break loose from physical constraints and turning logic upside down, inviting viewers to travel in a wild imaginary world, free from the shackles of reality.
