Sejak pertengahan abad 19, banyak fotografer yang ditugaskan untuk mendokumentasikan sumber daya alam dan budaya di Indonesia (Hindia Belanda). Hasil dokumentasi mereka digunakan untuk kepentingan ilmu pengetahuan maupun untuk hiburan, pariwisata dan sekedar memenuhi rasa ingin tahu masyarakat. Sejak itulah fotografi yang dimulai dengan penggunaan plat kaca hingga ke era digital hampir dua abad setelahnya menjadi kebutuhan sehari-hari yang esensial. Sisa dari masa awal fotografi dengan menggunakan negatif kaca tersebut masih dapat ditemukan di Indonesia dan di Belanda. Di Belanda disimpan di KITLV (The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies) yang menyediakan katalognya secara online. Sedangkan di Indonesia, koleksi plat kaca disimpan di Museum Nasional (berasal dari koleksi Koninklijk Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen/Masyarakat Seni dan Ilmu Diraja Batavia), Museum Bank Indonesia (berasal dari koleksi de Javasche Bank), Arsip Bank Mandiri (berasal dari koleksi De N.V. Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij), Direktorat Pelestarian Cagar Budaya dan Permuseuman, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan dan di Balai Konvservasi Borubudur (berasal dari koleksi Oudheidkundige Dienst– Dinas Purbakala), Jurusan Arsitektur Institut Teknologi Bandung (koleksi Van Romondt, sebagai bahan ajar dalam bentuk positif kaca).Pameran ini mencoba memperlihatkan rekaman kenangan Indonesia dalam media kaca serta sejarah fotografi dari prinsip camera obscura, perkembangan teknologi kamera (dari koleksi Museum Benteng Heritage) hingga penerapan prinsip camera obscura menjadi sebuah minat berbasis komunitas. Lacak sejarahnya di pameran ini dan temukan cara untuk menemukan koleksi ini di Indonesia.
Since the mid 19th century, many photographers were assigned to document the natural and cultural resources of Indonesia (which was at the time still known as the Netherlands Indies). The results of the works of the photographers were used for the purposes of knowledge and sciences and also for entertainment and tourism, or even just to fulfill curiosities and to entertain the society. Since then, photography, which started with the use of glass plates until the digital era of today, almost two centuries thereafter, has become a daily necessity. What remains of the early photographic documentation on glass plates can be found in the KITLV (The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies), The Netherlands, while in Indonesia they are being cared for by the Museum Nasional (formerly the collection of The Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences or Koninklijk Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen) and a few other institutions such as the Museum Bank Indonesia (formerly the collection of De Javasche Bank), the archives of Bank Mandiri (formerly the collection of N.V. Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij), and teh Directorate of Cultural Heritage Preservation and Museums of the Ministry of Education and Conservation Center of Borobudur (formerly the collection of Oudheidkundige Dienst), and Architecture Department of Institut Teknologi Bandung (from the collection of Van Romondt). This exhibition attempts to show the documentation and recording of memories of life in Indonesia in glass media through a timeline of documentary photography, while also presenting the history of photography from the principality of camera obscura, innovations on the technology of cameras (through the collection of cameras of the Museum Benteng Heritage, Tangerang) to the use of the camera obscura as a community based interest.
