The development of contemporary art practice in Bandung within the last decade shows an increasing dynamics. After several exhibitions of young artists who highlights on "Bandung", such as Bandung Art Now (BAN) held in the National Gallery of Indonesia in 2009, routine exhibitione in Bandung such as the Bandung New Emergence (BNE) held in Selasar Seni Sunaryo since 2005 and Bandung Contemporary in various locations around Bandung in 2014. Bandung young artists were beginning to be known and entered the art market circles in South East Asia and Internationally. Many galleries, art spaces, and biennale-triennale in Indonesia and other countries in South East Asia, several in Australia, Europe, began to include young artists from Bandung.
This exhibition in LAF is going to re-identify the works of Bandung artists from the aspect of themes development and medium explorations post art market boom. There are several things that stand out in their works. Such as the variety of themes starting from issues of popular global culture of the contemporary society that creates problems in the social sphere: self identity related to bipolarities of culture, history; to local-urban issues. With the spectrum of medium explorations; from painting, drawing, sculpture, performance, photography, to video and sound. The exhibition also aspires to display that in the one decade of development the art productivity in Bandung in the context of a more intense art community, "introvert" as a unique model of social field in Indonesian visual art.
The emergence of the generation born in the post-reform era, as most artists who were born in 1990s, with various political and social events far from their memories, perhaps even only understood from stories of their parents or from the news. A generation that grew in the sudden freedom in receiving full rights as citizens of a country and a nation, receiving global informations, with a more boisterous and complicated social-political atmosphere. Globalization, for this generation, seems to be ingrained, or a part of their identity since the beginning. But it actually became a question within themselves, "who am I?" This awareness is inevitably the result of self experience upon entering the "maturation" period, or in line with aesthetic experiences that lead them to the awareness of other values in the aspect of life around them.
The theme of Bipolarity to Multipolarity in this case refers to the discussion on the matter of subject and artistic behavior of contemporary artists, also the matter on work and artist identities, especially within the social field of visual art nowadays.
