UPCOMING EXHIBITION What is the difference between the Spice Trail and the Silk Road? The world knows of the Silk Road, but was silk the only commodity traded on this legendary network of trade routes that spanned from Europe to Africa and back? Did ancient traders traveling from the scorching Gobi Desert to the fierce Sahara bring with them only silk and Chinese ceramics? The Holy Scriptures are filled with the descriptions of spices used in various rituals. But how did these spices reach the birthplace of these scriptures—far from where these spices first came? Which road did they take? And who were these traders? These questions behind the beauty and the sanctity of the myths revolving around spices cannot be answered only by the historical record. Jan Jansson produced a very similar map in 1633 but without the inset of Bachian Island. MORE INFO MARKETPLACE ACEH, NORTH SUMATRA   A portrait of people at a marketplace in the district of Aceh (a stronghold of of fundamental Islam at the northern tip of Sumatra) reveals some distinctive differences in their features that Dutch chroniclers attributed to "immigration." That was probably a reference to the influx and inter-marriage of ethnic groups from the Malay Peninsula, China, India, Sri Lanka (them known as Ceylon) and Arabs from the Middle East. Their dress also exhibits the multiracial mix local head cloths and sarong, Western shirts and trousers for the men, and blouses and sarongs, sometimes worm will long pants, by the women. A sarong on the shoulders was used as protection against the elements. The Acehnese are noted for their fine weaving in which silver and gold threads are used in intricate patterns to make for a rich gloss, a more refined technique than that of the Minangkabau people to the southwest where the gold and silver threads are clearly visible in the fabrics. It is a program aimed to enhance expertise in curating contemporary art and related platforms. Participants are required to present an exhibition/art project proposal at the workshop and three selected participants from Indonesia will receive a grant for a two weeks study tour in Japan (February 22-March 6. 2016), after which they will be asked to organize an exhibition/art project in early 2017 in Indonesia.

Apakah anak-anak tahu jika seluruh penumpang harus paham akan sopan santun saat menggunakan kendaraan umum ?

Di Jepang ada beragam aturan yang berlaku dalam kendaraan umum, antara lain: dilarang berbicara/berkomunikasi menggunakan HP dalam kendaraan, dilarang ngobrol dengan suara keras, dan tidak membuang sampah sekecil apa pun, apalagi meludah. Bagaimana dengan di Indonesia ?

"hi, hello..! adalah sapaan saya kepada publik seni di Jogja. Sama halnya yg terjadi di masyarakat, sapaan merupakan langkah awal untuk menjalin interaksi yang positif. Dengan adanya interaksi yg positif itu saya berharap terjadi komunikasi antara karya seni saya dan masyarakat sehingga dapat diapresiasi.. ("Jack" Budi K)

Jack Budika -sapaan akrab Budi Kurniawan- perupa muda lulusan seni lukis ISI Yogyakarta (2014). Pada pameran tunggal di Jogja Contemporary kali ini, menghadirkan karya-karya lukisan dengan visualisasi corat-coret nan ekspresif. Karya-karya Jack Budika  sebenarnya lebih pada perenungan dirinya pribadi ikhwal apa pun yang pernah terlintas dibenaknya. Kita akan dihadapkan pada beragam tema yang tersemat di balik karya-karya Jack, karena ia tak terpaku fokus pada satu persoalan saja. Baginya setiap persoalan selalu memiliki keterkaitan satu sama lain. Pameran ini merupakan serangkaian "catatan" perenungan tentang suatu kebenaran yang dipahami oleh seorang Jack Budika. Selain menjadi sarana berbagi pada publik, pameran ini juga merupakan sapaan Jack Budika dalam berkenalan dengan publik seni rupa Jogja secara lebih luas.   (A.C. Andre Tanama)

Pameran ini adalah kerjasama antara Jogja Contemporary dan Panca Abhinaya, sebuah lembaga yang bergerak dibidang Education, Art and Tourism dari Kendal Jawa tengah. Pameran akan berlangsung hingga 24 Oktober 2015

"hi, hello ..! is my greeting to the art scene in Yogyakarta. As commonly happen in the daily life, the greeting is the first step to establish a positive interaction. With the positive interaction, I hope it will create communication between my art and society so thus appreciation .. ("Jack" Budi K)

Jack Budika- moniker of Budi Kurniawan- is a young artist graduated from  painting major of ISI, 2014. In his solo exhibition in Jogja Contemporary this time, presents expressive doodles paintings. Works by Jack Budika are exploration of his personal reflection on anything came crossed his mind. We will see various themes represented at the works of Jack, because he was not fixated on one issue only. For him everything are related to one another. This exhibition presents a series of contemplative "notes" of a truth that Jack Budika excerpted from his ideas. In addition to being a means of sharing to public, this exhibition is also a way of Jack Budika to greet the public , to start to know and get acquainted with the broader art scene in Jogja. (A.C. This exhibition is a co-production between Jogja Contemporary and Panca Abhinaya, an institution from Kendal, Central java, working on Education, Art and Tourism. The Exhibition will runs through 24 October 2015.
