"Nyoman Erawan calls this series of paintings tarian bayangan, or shadow dance,
which can be understood in many ways. The 'dance' element can be found in his
expressive brushstrokes; but what about 'shadow'? Perhaps, 'shadow' refers to how
we perceive the contrasting use of colors, the positioning of forms, and spatial
composition on the canvas. The concept of shadows speak of a contrast between the
seen and unseen, between the seen shape and the true unseen form. Regarding
'shadows', we can also look at the textural qualities of Erawan's painting spaces
that not only show how the canvas appears to bulge in or out, but also 'the flat
and the full', or 'the open and the hollowed out'. By understanding 'shadow' in this
way, we may be able to complete our perception regarding Erawan's 'dance'
within the Balinese principle of Karmaphala. It teaches that a person's life
achievements depend upon the character and aim of the work, movements,
and responses made by the body—good begets good, and vice versa. More simply,
we can comprehend this matter as cause and effect. However, a deeper contemplation
of this principle—through the practice of knowledge, science, or art—can convey
a person to the true nature of a cosmic balancing act."
